COVID Chronicles: Chapter 5 of 7 … Netflix Your Day Away

netflixing

[netfliks-ing] verb

1. The act of watching an entire season of a show in one sitting

2. A totally valid excuse for avoiding social obligations

3. The only thing left to do during the quarantine of 2020

Happy Friday friends + welcome to Chapter 5 of the COVID Chronicles!

Hope you’re all having a wonderful day! Sorry this post is going up so late, it’s been a mixture of technical difficulties ANNNND perhaps too much caffeine? Who knew that was a thing!

Since we’ve been COVID Chronicling together, I have acquired a few readers of the male persuasion so I thought it might be a good idea to take a break from all of the makeup content here on Lipstick & Bubbly and provide some “useful” information that everyone can enjoy!

And so, today we’re talking about something that we’re all VERY familiar with, something that we’ve been spending hours a day with. That’s right friends, today we’re talking NETFLIX … aka the only thing that’s getting us through COVID-19.

Now, I don’t know about you, but over the last 4 weeks, I’ve been bingeing literally anything and everything I can find on Netflix. You name it, I’ve seen it. Okay, well I suppose that’s not technically true, there are still quite a few shows I haven’t dabbled in..but I guess just give it time. And speaking of having even more time on my hands, as of 4pm today, I am a free woman as I won’t be “going back to work” albiet from home, until Monday, April 27th. Sounds great right?! Yeah sure, in my mind it’s feeling like more of a punishment. Sitting at my little home office at least has given me something to do while I’m on what feels like house arrest. Now what am I supposed to do? I suppose now might be a good time to start exercising again, or at least moving a bit more (since my only exercise these days is walking from the computer to the chips haha). Perhaps a few of you would be so kind as to send me a little “Ashley get off your butt and exercise today” text?! That would be great, thanks haha 🙂 Otherwise, I think I’ll be seeing a whole lotta Dalgona coffees, vodka sodas + Netflix in my future! Is this what retirement feels like? Either that or prison.

Finding a good show to watch on Netflix can be tough. It’s almost overwhelming how many options you have. Am I the only one that spends 15 minutes just picking out a show to watch? You know, sometimes having too many options isn’t always a good thing. It’s like going into a Baskin & Robbins and trying to pick just ONE of the 31 flavours. So in some ways, Netflix is JUST like Baskins, just with 10000x more flavours…anyone else craving ice cream right now?! I wonder if they’re still open?! haha

ANYWAYS, when all you can do to waste the day away is watch Netflix, sometimes that means you have to turn off the horror shows and dabble in a comedy, or dare I say a romcom (barf). But seriously, this whole quarantine business is already kinda dark, I don’t think all the murder I’ve been watching is helping me get outta this…funk.

Okay, so to help you narrow down your search, I’ve put together a list of my top 20 favourite binge-worthy shows on Netflix that’ll satisfy all of your viewing pleasures!

In no particular order, here are a few shows to help you get through the weekend…

1. Tiger King

Hey all you cool cats and kittens haha okay you’re not going to understand that if you haven’t watched this series yet, so hurry up and do it! Within the first 2 days of #wfh (working from home) I had binged all 7 episodes and considered myself on the case of everything Tiger King. Like…

1) Should Joe Exotic be in prison?

2) Did Carol feed her husband to the tigers?

3) Why is no one talking about the little setup that Doc Antle has on his compound?

Watch this one and let me know what you think, I have LOTS of questions that I need answers to.

2. Selling Sunset

So, this show is a must watch for anyone who likes…

-multi million $$ real estate in L.A.

-blonde bombshells

-drama!

I don’t know how there’s only one season so far on Netflix because from what I heard this show was a huge hit! Hopefully by the time you’ve made your way through all 8 episodes they’ll announce season 2’s release date!

3. Schitt’s Creek

Okay, Schitt’s Creek is hands down one of THE best shows I’ve ever watched. With 5 seasons currently on Netflix and the final season making it’s way there soon, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll wish that the Roses were your neighbours. Long story short this family of 4 goes from a life of luxury to living in a road side motel in a town called…Schitt’s Creek. I guarantee that after only one episode, you’ll be hooked!

4. Dating Around

For anyone that likes dating shows, this is a good one to watch! It made its Netflix debut in early 2019 and as soon as the episodes were released I was ALL over it. In this 5 part series, you’ll watch singles of all ages + cultures go on a series of dates in NYC. Get ready for the good, the bad and of course, the ugly.

5. Nailed It!

Nailed It! is the baking show of ALL baking shows! In each episode, 3 “regular people” compete to re-create the most extravagant cakes you’ve ever seen. It’s definitely the most hilarious baking (and cooking show for that matter) I’ve ever watched. And with 4 seasons currently on Netflix, it’ll be sure to make all of your cupcake, fondant & sprinkle dreams come true!

6. Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker

So you might see this one on the list and wonder if I accidentally included this in place of some popular horror series. “Self Made” does seem like a far cry from the shows I normally gravitate towards, but watch the trailer and tell me it doesn’t look amazing! The music in the trailer alone and the fierce #bossbabe vibes that I get from Octavia Spencers character make this a must watch for me! Oh, and then I realized that it was filmed just down the street from me, so this was a no brainer! Anyone else living in Hamilton…keep your eyes peeled for some popular landmarks! Let’s also take a minute to talk about this cast! Octavia Spencer, Blair Underwood AND Tiffany Haddish!

7. ATYPICAL

This coming of age series documents the life of penguin loving, autistic teenager, Sam. It’s sweet and innocent and this show gives me ALL the feels. I believe the final season is coming to Netflix in 2021 so now’s the time to get caught up!

8. Queer Eye

If there was ever a show that had the power to make ANY situation better, it was this one. Netflix launched the new Queer Eye (w/ a new cast) in February of 2018, and since then have conducted 36 heartwarming (+ tear filled) makeovers. 4 of those makeovers were done in their “We’re in Japan” season…which as you can assume by the name, takes place in Japan.

If you’ve never watched Queer Eye on Netflix (why the heck not?!). It’s exactly what you need to be watching during these challenging times.

9. GLOW UP

This show talks about makeup, makeup AND more makeup, so of course I’m obsessed. This British reality show has makeup artists compete to win a career-making opportunity in the beauty industry. These guys + gals take makeup to a whole new level!

10. Love is Blind

What do you get when you put a bunch of single guys and gals on either side of a wall? The most ridiculous…ly addicting dating show ever! If you’re part of the 5% of the world that still hasn’t watched this one, now’s the time my friends! Spoiler alert!!! In order to meet their match, they’ll have to propose…without ever seeing each other! Sounds pretty crazy right!? Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, after 10 episodes, you’ll finally know whether or not love is blind.

11. Slasher

Now, this show has my name written all over it! It’s gory, super scary and is guaranteed to make you jump outta your seat. Just listen to me when I tell you…do NOT watch this when you’re on the treadmill hahah your girl learned that the hard way. There are 3 terrifying seasons in the “Slasher” series and each one is gorier than the last. Think Scream meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It’s borderline horrifying…or in other words, MY FAV!

Each season features a different slasher! In season one, Sarah, who’s parents were brutally murdered in the entryway of their home some 20 years prior, returns TO that family home…where of course, murders begin to happen.

I actually started watching this series with Season 3 (for some unknown reason), and I was not disappointed. So it really doesn’t matter where you start with this show.

12. Dead To Me

I’ll be honest, this shows been on Netflix for a while now and it never really appealed to me. That being said like most things, once I started watching it I couldn’t stop. The show starts with Christina Applegate’s character in mourning following the sudden death of her husband. When she meets another mourning widow in group therapy an innocent friendship blossoms…. or so we think!

13. The Office

Hands down “The Office” is my all time favourite show! It’s 9 seasons of hilarity that’ll make you laugh, cry, and laugh so hard that you start to cry! The show follows the office life of employees at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Just thinking about it is making me want to watch an episode. Now, if you don’t wanna commit to all 9 seasons, here are my top 5 fav episodes! Watch at least one of them and tell me that you’re not hooked!

“Women’s Appreciation”

“Fun Run”

“The Injury”

“Stress Relief”

“Drug Testing”

14. YOU

“YOU” is like Dan Humphrey (aka boy next door Penn Badgley in Gossip Girl) meets Ted Bundy. When Penn Badgley’s character, a book store worker meets beautiful young writer Beck… a dark obsession grows. Oh my gosh it’s dark and twisted, and I’m obsessed!

15.  The Stranger

What would you do if a complete stranger came up to you and told you that your partner had been lying to you for years? Crazy right?! Mayhem ensues as secrets are released, proving that everyone has a secret. Based on the International best selling thriller, this is a must watch for all crime enthusiasts!

16. Making a Murderer

I feel like Making A Murderer started a new phenomenon, one that allows us to feel as though we’re on the case! In 2015, we were introduced to Steven Avery, a man who spent 18 years in prison despite being wrongfully convicted of sexual assault. Several years after he was released, he was accused of murder, found guilty and sent back to prison. Watch this one and then let me know if you think he’s guilty!

17. SAFE

When his daughter goes missing, Dexter, I mean Michael C. Hall’s character races against the clock to find her. It’s suspenseful and action packed with twists and turns at every corner. I binged this one in 2 days and I guarantee it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.

18. Too Hot to Handle

“Too Hot To Handle” just came into my life this morning and I’ll be honest, I’ve had this on all day. It starts off super cringe-y with a group of attractive (and half naked) guys & gals prancing around a house together. The kicker? While spending their days half naked and completing all sorts of racy little challenges, singles can’t umm..kiss, touch, or anything. So, if they manage to abstain from any kind of sexual contact, the group will win $100,000. If anyone’s caught breaking the rules, money is taken out of the groups bank account. While we are introduced to these seemingly confident, and dare I say cocky individuals, each day the layers are peeled back and they’re forced to get to know each other on a whole new level, without sex as a distraction.

19. When They See Us

Ugh this show is heartbreaking and is definitely a heavy one, so I would suggest watching this in small doses. This limited series is based around the 1989 case… you know what, I’m just going to copy + paste the description straight from Netflix so I do it justice. In 1989 a jogger was assaulted and raped in New York’s Central Park, and five young people were subsequently charged with the crime. The quintet, labeled the Central Park Five, maintained its innocence and spent years fighting the convictions, hoping to be exonerated. This limited series spans a quarter of a century, from when the teens are first questioned about the incident in the spring of 1989, going through their exoneration in 2002 and ultimately the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014. It got a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, so if that means something to you, then I’ll leave that right there for you to consider.

20. The Society

Picture this, a group of high schoolers are away on a school trip and return home to discover … that EVERYONE’s gone. Within the 10 episodes of season 1, this group of teens has to learn how to fend for themselves and to survive in a world with no rules. Season two is said to be released later this year so do yourself a favour and add this to your must watch list.

And there you have it friends, my top 20 binge-worthy shows to get you through the weekend.

I’ve heard so many amazing things about Stranger Things, OZARKS and Unorthodox so they’ll likely be in this weekends playlist of shows I’m going to watch!

Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu…. what’s your go to streaming service?

Thanks so much for stopping by & I’ll see you tomorrow for another Chapter!

Stay safe,

   xo
